Making Plans Before Your New Baby Arrives

When others find out that you are pregnant then many people will gladly give you advice, even when not requested. Although many of the items are handy and work well, there are many that play upon your fears as a first time parent.

Playard Baby

The following list tells you about the items that you will want to think about purchasing. To save money, you can even look at second hand stores for many of these items or ask friends with babies older than yours if you can borrow or purchase their items.

Playard Baby

* A car seat is mandatory, as hospitals will not even let you leave with the baby until you show them that you know how to buckle the baby in the seat. Many times, they will also follow you to the car to make sure it is installed correctly in the car. Car seats will be outgrown at least twice before your child grows out of them by the age of eight. If you are considering a second-hand car seat, ensure that it meets safety requirements.

* A baby monitor is a great tool to be able to hear the baby from any room in the house. This way you do not have to stay close to their room all the time. At night, I recommend that you turn the monitor off because you will hear every moan and movement that the baby makes and this can keep you awake. You need to get your rest to take care of your baby.

* When you are choosing a crib, you need to look for one that has these features.

*- Choose a good quality mattress that is firm.
*- The mattress should fit the crib snugly on all four sides.
*- The guardrail should be at least 26 inches above the top of the mattress.
*- The crib slats space should be no more than 2.375".
*- The crib bumper will help keep the baby's legs and arms out of the crib slats.

* A bouncy seat is a great place for you baby to be when it is not possible to hold him/her and is a great place to feed them their first meals of rice cereal. They cannot usually sit up well enough for a high chair when they begin cereals and the bouncy seat is a great answer to this problem.

* A playpen is a great way for you to get things like housework done and keep the baby safe. Around five months old is when a baby should be placed in it, unless it is used for a sleeping area when you are traveling.

The following is additional things that you need to make sure you have taken care of before your new baby arrives.

* Do you have your birth-plan detailed out and have you discussed it with your doctor or midwife and your husband?

* Is your suitcase ready to go or do you have the supplies that are need for a homebirth organized?

* Is your emergency contact list ready just in case you go into labor unexpectedly and at a time that your spouse or partner is not available or are at work?

* Do you have the nursery setup and ready for your new baby?

* Does your new baby have a family?

That last question may seem a little strange, but we plan so many other parts of our baby's lives that sometimes we overlook the basic thing that your baby needs a family. I am not going to even get into the political battle of single moms having children, I am simply going to advocate for a family for your baby.

Your parenting goal is to build strong relationships for your child so that you will give them confidence in themselves. A weak marriage does not do this and it does not give children confidence. Good parenting flows out of a stable and good marriage. If you protect your relationship with your spouse, then your children will be happy and healthy too!

Many times when a new baby joins a family (remember that you and your husband are a family before children), the marriage is not taken care of. Many times this is because of exhaustion, lack of time, lack of energy, etc., but you need to keep your first love healthy.

Before you bring your new baby home, take the time to consider your marriage. If you need to work on your marriage, do it now. Babies respond to stress so you want to keep your home life as stress free as possible. Besides, you don't want your baby to start out life being stressed, now do you? Keep your marriage healthy so that your family will be healthy as well. You will never regret the time that you put into it!

How to Baby Proof Your Home

Is your baby crawling, and pulling himself up on everything?
Then it's time to baby proof your house. Here are some ideas to
help you make your home safe for your baby and how to baby proof
your home.

Playard Baby

Keep all cords on your curtains or drapes tied up and out of
your baby's reach. Your baby could get entangled in them, or
the cord could get wrapped around his neck. Don't ever put a
crib or playpen next to a window with reachable cords.

Playard Baby

Install window guards so your baby can't fall through the
screens on windows that are above ground level. Adjust the
window guards so you can't open the window more than 6 inches.
Also, protect your screen door with a safety gate so your child
can't fall through.

Cover electrical outlets with plastic covers to prevent baby
from sticking things in them.

Move electrical cords out of your baby's reach. Place them
behind furniture so your baby doesn't chew on them, or pull a
heavy object on top of him.

Attach unstable furniture (i.e. bookcases or dressers) to the
wall so baby can't pull them down on himself.

Get rid of houseplants or move them out of your baby's reach.
Houseplants can be pulled down on your baby and chances are the
plants could be poisonous.

Put gates at the top and bottom of stairs to prevent baby from
falling down the stairs.

Place corner guards or cushioned strips on coffee tables or
anything that has any sharp corners. If your baby could fall
into it and its sharp, cover it up.

Lock the garage and any hobby areas. The garage is usually where
all of the poisonous household cleaners are kept, and you don't
want your baby to get hold of small objects he could choke on.

Keep your baby out of home offices. Pens, paper shredders, and
electrical cords pose possible threats.

Put child proof handles on certain doors to keep your baby from
entering the rooms you don't want him in.

Keep bathroom doors shut, use baby gates, or use a toilet lock
so your baby can't fall into the toilet and drown.

Get down on your baby's level and remove anything within three
feet of his reach that may be dangerous.

Get cabinet locks for the kitchen and bathroom so your baby
can't get into the trash or anything poisonous underneath the
sink

Some common household items that you may consider putting up out
of reach of your baby are: string, balloons, spare change,
needles, sewing supplies, alcoholic beverages, cleaning
supplies, candy, batteries, guns, knifes, perfumes, cosmetics,
razors, jewelry, light bulbs, candles, matches or lighters,
marbles, scissors, letter openers, pens, pencils, etc. These are
just a few hazardous items around the house that could cause
injury or death. Be on the lookout for these and similar
objects.

Hopefully this will help give you some ideas on how to baby proof
your home and make it safe for you and your baby.

Relationships and Interpretation

It is human nature to interpret. We cannot exist without interpretation. We interpret art, literature, and the behavior of animals, children and one another. We interpret anything others say to us and what they do not say to us. We interpret the behaviors of others. Websters dictionary defines interpretation as, "(1) to explain or tell the meaning of: present in understandable terms. (2) To conceive in the light of individual belief, judgment, or circumstance. 3) To represent by means of art: bring to realization by performance or direction." Interpretation is sometimes conscious and deliberate, at other times unconscious and most often somewhere between the two ends of that continuum. Unconscious interpretation can cause problems in relationships. Becoming aware of our interpretations can help us improve our relationships.

Playard Baby

I will begin with an example of the behavior of a toddler. This child was one of four children I was taking care of in the baby room of the daycare center where I was working. He was a delightful child. I will call him Michael. One day, as I was changing another toddler, Michael approached Susie in a toddler style social exchange. Susie was standing in a playpen with her hands on the railing. Michael was teething and began to chew on the railing. He then moved his mouth to Susie's hand and bit. Naturally, Susie began to scream in pain. I quickly intervened, gently scolding Michael and soothing Susie. Michael began to do this daily. My interpretation of Michael's behavior went like this; "Oh, he accidentally discovered that he can get a big reaction this way, he needs to learn how to get reactions in other ways and it's my job to help him learn how." My interpretation was not that Michael was exhibiting antisocial behaviors or that he was "bad". Michael's mother was a sensitive, sensible individual, so she and I worked together and gradually we helped Michael understand that biting somebody is not a good way to get attention. We did our jobs as parent and teacher and taught him how to get attention using positive social skills. I believe that had we interpreted Michael's behavior negatively, our reactions would have been stronger, shaming and punitive. The result of that kind of reaction from adults usually makes a toddler's behavior worse. Children will live up or down to the expectations of adults. Fortunately, I had enough understanding of early childhood development to know that Michael had not been "born bad," so I did not overreact to his behavior and eventually his behavior improved. In his (1998) book, The Explosive Child; a New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily frustrated, "Chronically Inflexible" Children, Ross Greene writes, "your interpretation of a childs inflexible-explosive behaviors will be closely linked to how you try to change these behaviors. In other words, your interpretation will guide your intervention" (page 14).

Playard Baby

I have been involved with many situations in which adults misinterpreted childrens behaviors, overreacted and made the problem worse. A classic parental overreaction occurs when parent and child are emotionally too close. This kind of situation can happen if parents have low self-esteem and may be relying on their children to help them feel better. It will often occur that a child feels angry with the parent and does not know how to communicate this. The child will yell, "I hate you!" Many parents make the mistake of interpreting that angry statement as a personal assault. Parents have to be in charge and often have to make decisions that result in a child's feeling angry because they cannot always do exactly what they want to do. Children are not mature enough to know how to recognize and express their feelings to their parents. This situation is especially true if the parents have not learned how to recognize their feelings and express them to the children, appropriately. Children learn best through the example of their parents. If parents have not learned how to talk about their feelings, the children will not know how to do so either. When parents become self-aware and learn how to express their emotions well, children will follow their example.

Interpretation occurs in all relationships. Interpretation is most difficult in written communication. When we communicate with someone through text, e-mail or letter we cannot see the person's facial expression or body language and there is no tone of voice to help us understand the speaker more clearly. It is much easier for us to misinterpret someone when we are reading his or her written messages.

In intimate relationships interpretation is always present. In more difficult relationships negative interpretations run rampant, and are part of the problem. One or both partners make negative, destructive interpretations about their partner. Often people do this without recognizing what they are doing. Sadly, that results in people assuming the worst about their partner. They decide that the other person is an adversary. Their thinking might be something like, "she just takes advantage of me" or "he never does anything around the house" or "she has no principles" or "he is cold."

We can change our interpretations, not the other person. If a spouse begins to complain about something he perceives to be wrong in the house, it does not necessarily follow that he is blaming his spouse for the problem. She might hear it as a complaint about herself; she may be taking it personally. She can change her interpretation. She is in charge of how she interprets what her spouse says, and vice versa. A good question would be to ask her spouse, "Are you complaining about me?" or, "What is it that you believe is wrong?"

There is a difference between responding and reacting. If a person reacts it may be due to their feeling attacked, insecure, and on the defensive. A reaction may be mostly emotional, defensive and not well thought out. In other words, the person's interpretation is immediate and unconscious. He may not know it. Someone who can respond knows that meaning is different for each individual and that it is important to ask questions before a satisfactory response can be made. If one individual is highly reactive, it may be because of his interpretation of his spouses comment. He may have made a negative interpretation and felt as if his spouse was criticizing him.

A final example involves a man who was socialized to be a hero and competitive. When his normally well-organized wife completed a task that he did not know was occurring, he became quite angry and accused her of being "uppity" and of "trumping me." The use of the term "uppity" suggests that when his wife is being well organized and behaves competently, he interprets her behavior as a personal assault. This woman did not know that he was interested in or concerned about doing the task she had done. The idea that she "trumped" him suggests that his interpretation is that she was trying to beat him. Questions revealed that she was simply doing what she always does. Her behavior was not about him. Indeed, in his book, Men in Therapy, David Wexler discusses "mind reading" or interpretation. "In dysfunctional couples, negative mind reading runs rampant. It is as if each partner has made what Gottman (John 1999) calls a 'secret silent decision' about the other that he or she is an adversary and not worth respecting. Each assumes the worst about the other" (Page 101) Wexler explains that a spouse who is acting as a friend can interpret his or her spouse's behavior positively. Had the man in this example perceived his wife positively, he would have known that she was just completing a task as she saw it needed to be done.

Anyone perceiving or interpreting their partner as an "adversary" will have difficulty in their relationship. Responsible partners take their time as they interpret their partner's behavior, and find a positive way to respond rather than reacting negatively.

In their textbook, Couples in Treatment, Gerald Weeks and Stephen Treat point out that, "there is no universality of meaning in behavior, and that inquiry for further depth of understanding is a necessity" (pg. 73). They are teaching therapists and couples to ask questions to develop a clearer and deeper understanding of the behavior another person exhibits that the observer may not understand. Assuming a person was deliberately doing something to hurt another is a thoughtless reaction that can lead to many negative interactions. The whole world can benefit through each one of us choosing to slow down, be mindful and recognize the positive in other humans.

Teaching Independence: Developing Confidence and Self-Reliance in Your Child

It's so easy. We all do it from time to time. We love them
so much. We just want to protect our children from anything
that might harm them. So we reach out our arm and gather
them in. We do their chores for them so they can enjoy a few
more moments of play. But these choices carry consequences.
When you shelter your children or do what they can do for
themselves your children become overly dependent. Worse,
they don't challenge themselves or develop self-confidence.

Playard Baby

Learning self-reliance and independence comes early. But it
doesn't happen without your help. You need to support your
children by teaching them to be independent. In this article
you'll learn how to encourage your childrens' independence;
how and when to let them do things on their own; what to do
when they need help; and what to do when things go wrong.

Playard Baby

Let's Meet Julie

Julie is six years old. She's shy and indecisive and doesn't
have any close friends. Julie's teacher, Mrs. Sterling,
often keeps Julie company at school and gives her extra
help. Mrs. Sterling doesn't mind. Julie is such a quiet and
well-behaved girl.

Then, at a parent-teacher meeting, Mrs. Sterling mentions
Julie's behavior to her parents. She wasn't always that way,
they say. Julie was a wild baby and got into everything. At
the time, Julie's parents were concerned for her safety so
they kept Julie in her playpen, put up gates throughout the
house and even put her on a leash at times. For her safety,
they added.

Eventually, Julie grew out of her wanderlust and became a
polite little girl. But maybe we overdid it, say Julie's
parents. Now she isn't interested in doing anything on her
own. She just waits for us to advise her.

Mrs. Sterling suggests that they give Julie a light
chore--something she could easily accomplish. Maybe that will
help Julie feel like she's in charge and already has
permission to do a good job on her own. Julie's parents
agree.

In a few weeks, Mrs. Sterling notices that Julie is seeking
less help and spending longer periods with the other
children. Then one day in a burst of pride Julie tells Mrs.
Sterling the proper way to empty a dishwasher and put away
the dishes. Mrs. Sterling thanks Julie for the lesson and
smiles as Julie runs off to play with her new friends.

Now let's take a look at how you can teach your children
independence, self-reliance and the joy of confidence.

Encouragement

Parents need to support their children in their natural
quest for independence. A great way to do this is with
chores. Most kids are in a hurry to grow up; helping out
around the house teaches them responsibilities and shows
them they can make a difference through their actions.

But be careful. Your child can sense if you're concerned
about their abilities. Let them know that it's a big help to
have them involved and give them jobs they can accomplish.
If you're apprehensive about their safety or performance
give them another job.

Allowance

Children who are allowed to do things on their own develop
self-reliance. Early on, leave your child alone for small
periods. They'll learn that they're safe and can do things
without you in the same room. Later, friendships teach them
to cope in different situations. Chores, hobbies and
homework develop independence, too. Here are some methods to
help your children succeed on their own.

o Model self-reliance in your own behavior.

o Show them step-by-step how a project is done.

o Make sure they know the goal so they go in the right
direction.

o Make the project fun! Time it. Do it backwards. Dance.
Make a game out of it.

o Set timelines for a project, but let your children
complete it their own way.

o Let them do the job in parts so they succeed each time
they work on it.

o Let them fail. Let your children try things their way and
learn from failure.

o When they forget to do a chore, show them the
consequences, but don't do the job for them.

Support
Knowing when to step in and help your child with a project
can be challenging. Here are some guidelines, but observe
how your children solve problems and support them
appropriately.

o Step in to support your children when their approach is
unsafe, unhealthy or disruptive.

o In general, make yourself available to help, but encourage
them to work through any snags they hit on their own.

o If you do step in, emphasize what's working and then
suggest ways to do the job better, or consider doing the job
together.

o If the job is done well enough... leave well enough alone.
Perfection is not the aim. Unless the work needs to be
corrected for a very good reason congratulate your children
on their efforts. And praise them often.

Learn from Mistakes
Part of self-reliance means learning from mistakes. Here are
some tips to help your children keep going when things go
wrong.

o Tell them everyone makes mistakes.

o Tell them it's the effort that counts.

o Tell them you love them no matter what.

o Point out what they did right.

o Ask them how they could do it differently.

o Encourage them to do the job using their new approach.

Protecting your children from harm is vital, but it's also
important to allow them to explore, to engage in life and
even to fail. That's how they learn self-reliance. In the
long run, if children aren't taught independence they lack
self-confidence--and that's very difficult to learn later
on.

Encourage your children's independence. Teach them how to do
things on their own and support them as they learn. Perhaps
one of the greatest gifts you can teach your children is to
learn from their mistakes and to fill their lives with the
confidence and self-reliance necessary to succeed.

Maltese Potty Training Behavior - 9 Steps To House Training Your New Puppy

So you just purchased a maltese puppy. Now what? How can you get your puppy to behave and to not pee or poop on your nice floor.

Playard Baby

Keep in mind that training a puppy is a lot like raising a child. It is a lot of work, they keep you up at night, they get into things and make messes, but your new baby (puppy) also gives you a lot of joy and love.

Playard Baby

Potty training maltese puppies is not that hard.

Here are some proven steps to potty train your new pet:

1) Purchase a play pen or kennel.

2) Line the kennel or play pen with newspaper or puppy pads.

In the play pen there is room for newspaper on one side and bedding on the other. If you use a kennel it is a little smaller and your puppy may have a few accidents at first. Generally dogs do not potty where they sleep but when they are very young they just can't hold it for long.

NOTE: The play pen is also great for when you are unable to give your puppy undivided attention. You can place it in the play pen and it is a safe place for them to play and not get hurt or get into anything.

3) Keep your puppy in the play pen or kennel when not attended or when you are not at home.

4) Within 30 minutes of feeding make sure there is newspaper or puppy pads accessible for your puppy to go on.

5) If you catch your puppy in the act - place him immediately on the newspaper or pads so they can finish there.

6) Do not hit your puppy. They do not respond to cruelty. Instead reward with treats whenever they go potty properly on the paper or pads.

7) As soon as your puppy has received its third set of shots you can begin putting them outside to go potty. You can move the newspaper outside to help them get used to going outside.

8) After a while (usually 2-6 months) they will get trained to go outside.

9) The end result will be that you will get a well trained well behaved puppy and a happy owner too!

The first weeks of potty training your new maltese puppy may be a little trying at times but you have to remember this is a commitment to a life long friend and your new puppy is getting used to his or her new family.

You really want to be consistent in your training.

Your puppy will be more easily trained if you follow a routine - otherwise you will confuse him, causing him to have more accidents and have a much harder time with potty training.

Putting time into your maltese puppy at the beginning of its life will pay big dividends in good behavior later.

Baby Milestones - Crawling

Having a baby can be one of the most exciting, and not to mention confusing things that you will ever experience in your life. There are hundreds of things to observe and keep track of in your babies' development such as their first words, sitting up on their own, attempts at independent walking, etc. These are what pediatricians call milestones. Milestones are very important and reaching them helps evaluate how far ahead your baby is in its development. Also, they allow doctors to measure your baby's progress and suggest new activities to stimulate their development. Crawling is one of the very important milestones in your baby's life for a multitude of reasons.

Playard Baby

What crawling is?
For your baby to start crawling means a few things. First of all, it means your baby has the vital brain area developed that is responsible for coordinated movement and balance. It also means your baby has strong enough arms to support his entire upper body - a very important sign. When your baby first attempts to crawl, he will start by putting weight on his hands and knees, and then slowly start to add motion. At the same time, your baby will be strengthening his muscles for future use. Babies like to crawl because it is their first sense of freedom and mobility. No longer are they constrained by their crib walls or playpen gate. They are now free to explore their surroundings without being constricted.

Playard Baby

When it develops?
For most babies, crawling develops shortly after they learn to sit up on their own without parental assistance. This is usually six to seven months after birth, but can be as early as four months and as late as ten months for some babies. In recent years, babies have been learning to crawl later and later, and many babies have opted to skip the crawling stage altogether.

Don't be alarmed if your baby opts to use a different form of locomotion, such as scooting across the floor or rolling around. A few rare babies even go straight from sitting up to walking. You know your baby will be ready for crawling when he can sit up well without support. After this, you will notice that you baby tries to push off with his knees and will attempt to crawl. It may take a few weeks, but eventually your baby will be able to master going from the sitting position to the crawling position.

This truly is a fun time for parents to watch and observe. Don't stress out too much about initial unsuccessful attempts; just remember to clear the floor from all small and big things your baby might be able to reach in his newfound freedom. Take a lot of pictures and enjoy!
