It is believed by some that the bridal shower was what replaced the dowry. But did you know that bridal showers were thought to have begun with the Dutch? (However, this is debated by some who believe it began in the United States or Canada.)
Tradition has it that a young and in love couple were not given the green light to wed by the bride's dad because the groom-to-be was too nice a guy and was always giving his money to the poor instead of saving it for his future bride. The townspeople, all believing this was a match made in heaven, got together and filled trunks with everything the young couple would need for their new home. Dad couldn't help but say yes.

Other history and traditions include a fruitcake with a cedar tree 'seedling' setting up on top. The purpose? In Bermuda, after the ceremony, the tree is planted and expected to grow as the couple's love grows. And, in the middle ages, it wasn't believed to be a sign of purity for the bride that the cake was white, but how pure the sugar was and the whiter the icing was signified the expense of the cake itself.
Bridal showers usually take place four to six weeks before the wedding date and it is customary for the bride's maid of honor to host the event. Today, there are many ways to host a bridal shower, however traditionally, games have been played, cake and refreshments served and gifts opened. One thing has remained consistent: the bride must be in attendance in order for the shower to be a real success. So, don't forget to tell the bride!
Once the invitations have been sent out, the plans need to be finalized for the show and the coming together begins - color themes, games chosen, cake flavors, etc. Many have chosen to nix the games and just socialize. However, there are some die-hard bridal shower game fans that still like the competition and fun of a good shower game. Some of the most popular are the Bridal Gift Bingo, Famous TV Couples, and Making Poems (out of specific words suitable to the event).
Devotions, tributes and the like have also replaced the traditional bridal shower games and more elaborate refreshments have replaced the high calorie cakes and nut dishes. Whatever you choose, the bridal shower should be a time of fun, laughter, and letting the bride-to-be know she is loved and wished a lifetime of happiness.
